Rope Salon x Kinbaku Live Session by huahua

Date: Friday, 24 May 2024

Time: 1830-2230 (Door opens at 1815)

Venue: Studio Yukari, London E1 4BG

This Rope Salon will feature a Kinbaku Live Session by Huahua followed by a discussion. Huahua regularly teaches the Ipponnawa class at Studio Yukari.

What is a Rope Salon?

Rope Salon is a gathering where you can tie, get tied, practise, meet new people and socialise. All levels are welcome.

What happens at the Rope Salon depends on who is there, how everyone gets along and what people decide to do. On some days, you may see dynamic suspension. On other days, you may see more intimate sessions. And of course, sometimes we like to just relax, have a cup of tea and chat about Shibari.

There is a different theme for every Rope Salon at Studio Yukari. You are encouraged to focus your practice and your discussion around the theme. Naoko is also happy to give general feedback (but please note that there will be no formal instruction) upon your request. If the theme is not for you, you are also very welcome to have open practice.

There will be music, tea and snacks. We strive to cultivate a comfortable and open environment for attendees to practise Shibari.

For this particular event, door will close after 1900 in order to minimise disruption to the event.

How many people attend?

Studio Yukari strives to create a cozy, intimate environment for all attendees. We maintain a capacity of 20-30 people depending on the individual event.

Can I come on my own?

Of course! Many attendees come on their own and make new friends at the event. If it is your first time or if you are nervous, please feel free to talk to us and we are happy to introduce you to other attendees.

Dress Code

Please wear something that is comfortable for you to tie / get tied in. In terms of temperature control, we have windows (in case it gets too stuffy), A/C unit (in case it gets really HOT, pun intended) and heater.

Please note that Studio Yukari has a strict no-shoe policy. We have a cloakroom on ground level for shoes and coats.

What should I bring?

Studio Yukari is equipped with wooden beams, bamboos (2 meter long) and hashira. Please bring your own ropes, safety shears and any other suspension equipment you might need (such as carabiners, rings and slings), and items for aftercare.

About huahua

hua hua (she/her) is a Shibari artist and founder of Borderline Shibari. She began the first public Shibari classes in Shanghai in 2017 and spent many years working to encourage a healthier approach to Kink in China. She is currently based in Amsterdam where she is continuing to teach and produce events, as well as expanding Borderline online to provide accessibility to Shibari education worldwide.

She believes that rope bondage is a practice of mindfulness and authentic communication. To her, ropes are like a bridge: creating connection between people and cultures. She is passionate about exploring how Shibari can be expressed through different mediums, particularly through film, performance and instillations.

hua hua is currently on a journey of making Shibari and Kink content visible on public platforms without being demonetised or censored.

Her teaching style is more holistic than systematic, focusing on intentionality and a slow mindful pacing. She does not teach in one particular style, but rather on adapting the tie to meet the needs of everyone involved.

* This is a recurring class. Each class will focus on different concepts and ties. Please refer to Studio Yukari’s website and social media for future dates.

Explore and experience the beauty of Naka Style of semenawa.

Dates:

Sunday 12 May 2024

Sunday 26 May 2024

Sunday 9 June 2024

Sunday 30 June 2024

(future dates to be announced)

Time: 1200-1700 (Doors open at 1130)

Venue: Studio Yukari E1 4BG

Pre-requisites: Intermediate or above. Partnered.

Workshop description

This recurring class explores Naka Style of semenawa, as interpreted by Naoko, the third deshi (disciple) of Naka Akira sensei. There will be discussions, demonstrations, exercises and guided practice on the techniques and concepts in this style. We will build deeper understanding on the “how” and the “why”, the techniques, progression in feelings, and traditional aesthetics.

Each class will focus on different concepts and ties. Naoko will adapt her teaching to the students; exercises may be floor ties or suspensions depending on the level, progression and interest of the students. ‘Rope is free” - in developing these skills we are able to focus on tying in the moment and enjoying the journey together, as opposed to trying to reach a pre-determined end goal or shape.

Students are encouraged to attend these sessions regularly for better progression.

Prerequisites

For the one tying / rigger:

  • You must have good understanding of fundamental techniques and concepts in Shibari / Kinbaku.

  • You must be able to tie a solid gote suitable for suspension, in any style. Some basic understanding of Naka Style of gote will be helpful but not essential. If you tie the Akechi style of gote, you must master the 3-rope variations (a 2-rope gote will not meet the pre-requisites)

  • You must have a good understanding of rope safety

  • You must be open to exploring Naka Style and traditional Japanese concepts

For the one getting tied / model:

  • You must feel comfortable being tied and suspended in a gote

  • You must have good understanding of safety in Shibari, especially the difference between nerve compression and blood circulation loss

  • You must be open to expressing, communicating and exploring vulnerabilities in rope

  • You must be open to exploring Naka Style and traditional Japanese concepts

What to bring

  • Jute ropes (at least 12 lengths of ropes, 5-6mm in diameter). We also suggest having varying lengths of ropes (some shorter ones are always helpful)

  • Safety shears or any other suitable cutting tools

  • Notepad and a pen (phones are not allowed for note-taking*)

  • Comfortable clothing

  • Snacks and drinks

  • Aftercare items

  • Respect, kindness and an open mind :)

* We request a phone-free environment for the weekend. If note-taking on your phone is a matter of accessibility, please let us know in advance of the weekend.

About Naoko (formerly Subay)

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Naoko is a Shibari artist, performer and educator based in London. She is the founder of Studio Yukari (London, 2022) and Kokoro Studio (Hong Kong, 2015). She is part of Nawa Naka Kai 縄奈加会 and in 2023 was recognised as the third deshi of Naka Akira 奈加あきら sensei.

Around 2011, Naoko was introduced to Shibari as a Shibari model. Deeply fascinated by its aesthetics, eroticism and emotions, she began studying the art of Japanese rope bondage in Japan. Being drawn to the raw expression of vulnerability in semenawa 責め縄, Subay found her teacher Naka Akira sensei and has been formally studying with him since.

Naoko’s style of semenawa is described to be “feminine and inclusive”. She draws great inspirations from her short encounter with Yukimura Haruki in 2014. Using rope to engage in an empathic conversation forms the heart of her style in Shibari. Having had extensive experience in multiple tying styles, and vast exposure to different rope communities in Asia and in the West, she has developed a unique, adaptive and evolving approach to tying and teaching.

Naoko has taught and performed in over 20 cities, and has had the honour of assisting Naka Sensei at his Nawa-kai, Satsuei-kai and Kenkyuu-kai in Tokyo, alongside his international workshops in San Francisco and Copenhagen.

Ipponnawa with huahua

Ipponnawa with huahua

Explore the endless possibilities for connection through a single rope with Huahua.

Date: 30 January, 27 February, 26 March, 30 April, 28 May, 25 June 2024 (Tuesday)

Time: 1930-2230 (door opens at 1900, closes at 1945)

Venue: Studio Yukari, London E1 4BG

What is Ipponnawa?

Ipponnawa means one rope. Beyond the literal meaning, Ipponnawa is a unique concept in Shibari developed by the late master, Yukimura Haruki, who heavily included this concept in his style Yukimura Ryu. Ipponnawa has come to represent a method of tying where the primary focus of the play is attention to communication and the connection between both people. Unlike other styles, where we can rely on adding ropes to create a response, with one rope there is nothing to distract from the tension between us.

What you will learn?

With a single rope there is endless potential. In this monthly-recurring class we will be exploring all of the possibilities that can be created when we are intentional about the application of each individual rope. Each month we will explore different aspects such as: opening a session, one rope patterns, and the progression of emotion. In each class there will be a range of exercises designed to develop our communication skills, body handling and awareness of body language.  Practicing Ipponnawa can also help students to improvise when tying. We will be practicing how to tie by following the reactions of the model and the natural flow of the dynamic, rather than by following set patterns.

Class Structure

The classes are designed as a safe space, where we can welcome vulnerability, and foster intimacy. For this reason, a large portion of the class is dedicated to discussion and feedback. Classes will begin with self-introductions over tea and a talk on Ipponnawa. Each month the class will be designed around a different theme, these can range from the philosophical, to the technical, such as practicing selflessness and body manipulation. We will study theory and put these into practice with rope exercises. Feedback is a very important feature of these classes as I strongly believe that there are a lot of details and inspiration from watching others, and hearing new perspectives.

Often students will be asked to demonstrate to the whole group and receive feedback altogether. At the end of each class will be a demonstration followed by dedicated time to freely improvise.

How long is the class?

Each class is 2.5 hours in length. Doors open thirty minutes before class so that you have time to settle in.There will be a 1 hour free practice time after the class, students may choose to participate to improvise based on the lesson content, freely practice or skip this out if they wish.

1900 Door opens

1930-2130 Class

2130-2230 Free practice

What level of experience do I need to join this class?

Ipponnawa is suitable for all levels of Shibari, which can benefit experienced and novice shibari practitioners alike. It is recommended that students can familiarise themselves with basic Shibari techniques such as the Honmusubi (Square Knot) but it is not necessary.

Do I need to prepare my own rope?

It is recommended that students bring at least one full length rope (7-10m), however ropes will also be provided at the studio. Whilst Ipponnawa means one rope, there are some exercises where we will use more than one.

Can I attend alone?

Yes, you are welcome to attend alone and find a partner to work with in the class. You can also attend alone if you want to only experience being tied.

Is switching permitted?

Everyone in the class is welcome to experience both being tied and tying others, however please be mindful of the time if you chose to experience both. In some exercises we will also include switching partners.

What if I do not want to tie or be tied?

Consent is highly valued in this class, you do not need to participate in any activity that you do not feel comfortable with. As a large portion of the class is discussion and theory, there is a lot to absorb without having to participate in the physical practices.

Can I practice another Shibari style during the class?

There will be time at the end of the class for free practice. Please try to keep your own free practice to this dedicated space and not during the exercise, talk or demonstrations as to not disturb other students around you.

All levels are welcome. You can come on your own or come with your friends/tying partners. If it is your first time or you are relatively new to Shibari, please feel free to message us in advance and our staff are happy to give you a brief introduction and connect you with other attendees.

There will be a quiet corner with a low table for people who prefer to only observe and be by themselves.

How is Open Studio different from a Rope Salon?

Studio Yukari’s Rope Salons take place every month. It is a social gathering with introduction and a theme. We often host a Kinbaku live inviting talented riggers and their models to share their style.

On the other hand, Open Studio runs twice a month in an open format, with tiered pricing for people with different financial means. You are welcome to come and leave anytime. The event will be run by YOU, the community, instead of by us as the host.

Open Studio

* This is a recurring event. Open Studio takes place the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month. Please pay attention to our calendar for exact dates.

Date: 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month

Time: 1830-2230 (Doors open at 1815)

Venue: Studio Yukari, London E1 4BG

Open Studio is an event for people to tie, practise, observe and talk about Shibari. Studio Yukari opens its doors for people who prefer to practise Shibari in a more intimate, quiet setting. There will be no introduction, no music and no theme.

All levels are welcome. You can come on your own or come with your friends/tying partners. If it is your first time or you are relatively new to Shibari, please feel free to message us in advance and our staff are happy to give you a brief introduction and connect you with other attendees.

There is no obligation to tie. We believe that apart from attending classes and regular practice, watching peers tie form an integral part of learning as well. We also have a mini library with books on Shibari, ikebana (flower arrangement), chado (tea ceremony) and kitsuke (kimono fitting). There will be a quiet corner with a low table for people who prefer to only observe and be by themselves.

Please note that Studio Yukari is a space dedicated to Shibari only but not BDSM play. Our risk policy does not allow for dynamic drops and lifts, double/triple suspensions and load bearing neck ropes. When in doubt, please speak with our staff for clarification on our risk policy.

Dress Code

Please wear something that is comfortable for you. Please note that Studio Yukari has a strict no-shoe policy. We have a cloakroom on ground level for shoes and coats.

What should I bring?

Studio Yukari is equipped with wooden beams, bamboos (2-meter long) and hashira. If you wish to tie, please bring your own ropes, safety shears and other suspension equipment that you might need, such as carabiners, rings and slings), and items for aftercare.

Limited numbers of community ropes will be available.

Rope Salon x Public Play Session by Mango & Lie

Date: Friday, 19 April 2024

Time: 1830-2230 (Door opens at 1815)

Venue: Studio Yukari, London E1 4BG

This Rope Salon will feature a Public Play Session by Mango & Lies followed by a discussion. Mango is an authorized instructor of Kanna style. His partner for the public play session will be Lies.

About Mango

Mango (aguacate/AGKT) (he/him) is originally from Europe and currently resides in Ottawa (Canada). Starting his rope journey in 2015 as a rigger, he enjoys challenging and tormenting ropes, the art of semenawa. His main interest lies in simple ties and in the classics of kinbaku. He equally enjoys exploring floorwork and suspensions as they allow a vast array of play possibilities. In 2022, Akechi Kanna, one of Japan's leading and most influential rope artists and teachers, named him an official instructor of her style. He has performed and shared his knowledge about rope in half a dozen countries across the world and closer to home. He is a co-founder of CORE, a successful rope education collective in Ottawa.

Pricing structure

There are three different pricing tiers for people with different financial means.

There is a limited number of solidarity tickets for each event. We try to balance financial flexibility with financial sustainability for the space. However, if solidarity tickets are sold out and you would really love to join us, please email us at contact@studioyukari.com and we will try our best to facilitate.

We also strongly encourage people who have the financial capacity to get the supporter tickets. This will allow us to offer more solidarity tickets in the future and support the growth of our community!

Semenawa in Naka Style with Naoko

* This is a recurring class. Each class will focus on different concepts and ties. Please refer to Studio Yukari’s website and social media for future dates.

Explore and experience the beauty of Naka Style of semenawa.

Dates:

Sunday 17 March 2024

Sunday 31 March 2024

Sunday 14 April 2024

Tied will be facilitated by Anna Noctuelle . Anna is a highly experienced and versatile Shibari practitioner with over 18 years of experience. Her journey with Shibari began as a personal discovery and has since evolved into a multifaceted practice encompassing teaching, modelling and performing.

Being a linguist in her other life she’s constantly exploring the communicative aspects of Shibari. Anna Noctuelle’s blend of skills, knowledge, and experience make her an exceptional practitioner and educator of Shibari who understands what it means create safe and inclusive learning environments which reward inquiry, curiosity, courage, experimentation and playfulness.

Introduction to Naka Style

Date: 2-3 March 2024 (Sat-Sun)

Time: 1200-1800 (Doors open at 1130)

Venue: Studio Yukari E1 4BG

Capacity: 8 pairs

Tentative Schedule:

1130 Doors open

1200 Workshop

1445 Break

1530 Workshop

1800 End

* Please note that the above schedule is subject to changes depending on how the class progresses and the energy level of everyone.

Workshop description

This workshop is an introduction to the fundamental elements and philosophy of Naka Style, as interpreted by Naoko. Naka Style follows the tying style of Naka Akira sensei, who recently appointed Naoko as his third deshi (disciple). Naoko will also share her personal approach to semenawa.

“Rope is free” - as what Naka-sensei and Naoko believe. In exploring and focusing on the meaning of every single rope, we are able to tie with deeper connection and empathy within semenawa, which is often misinterpreted as being shape-driven and therefore rigid.

We will build understanding on three important aspects of basic ties in the style, balancing both the “how” and the “why”:

  • Techniques (structures and safety)

  • Progression in feelings and connection

  • Traditional aesthetics

Please note that this workshop will cover the Naka-style of gote in extensive detail, and it will be the main upper-body harness we will use throughout the weekend. Please note that Naoko’s way of tying the gote differs from the European interpretation.

We will learn together through discussion, observations of demonstrations by Naoko, and exercises on both hard and soft techniques. Naoko will adapt her teaching to the students; exercises may be floor ties or suspensions depending on the level, progression and interest of the students. ‘Rope is free’ - in developing these skills we are able to focus on tying in the moment and enjoying the journey together, as opposed to trying to reach a pre-determined end goal or shape.

Participants should note that Naoko’s education is largely from private lessons with Naka-sensei in Tokyo. This means her teaching style, techniques and philosophy are more Japanese-influenced which may differ from the interpretation by other teachers.

Ipponnawa with huahua
Feb

Ipponnawa with huahua

Explore the endless possibilities for connection through a single rope with Huahua.

Date: 27 February 2024 (Tuesday)

About Naka Akira 奈加あきら

Born in 1959, he started in the world of adult entertainment in 1985 entered the world of kinbaku in the early 1990s through his relationship with Yoshimura Shoichi (1952-2015), the founder and CEO of adult video company Cinemagic, where he met Nureki Chimuo (1930-2013).

From the early 90s, Naka Akira attended Nureki’s Kinbaku bi kenkyu kai (often abbreviated in Kinbiken) (Society for the research of beauty in kinbaku) during five years and was famously only authorized to tie after a 2 years attendance. Naka Akira, who received his stage name from Nureki Chimuo, is featured in the 16th issue of the magazine Kinbiken tsūshin (Bulletin of the Kinbiken) edited by Nureki.

Working at CInemagic, Naka Akira also met with AV director Tohjiro the creator later of AV company Dogma, a professional relationship still active today.

Among his production for Cinemagic, one can suggest

「奴隷女教師 女囚淫夢」 (Dorei onnakyōshi joshu inmu) (The slave female teacher, the perverse dream of being a female prisoner) , director: Tohjiro, 1998.

「ボンデージワォーリァーズ #2」 (Bondage Warriors #2) with Fukai Ai, Shima Kumiko and Atsuki Arisa, director Ishikawa Kin, 2000.

「白衣の生贄 #5」(Hakui no ikenie #5) (The sacrificial victim in a white nurse uniform #5) with Shimizu Kaori, director Akiyama Noboru, 2002.

「奴隷秘書 #41」 (Dorei hisho #41) (The slave secretary #41) with Ōna Kurosaki, director Hayamizu Kenji, 2004.

In 2001, Tohjiro established the adult video firm Dogma immediately employing Naka Akira. 2001 was also the year when Naka Akira did his first public performance at Mugen, the Sm bar in Roppongi owned by Hayakawa Yoshikazu, aka the writer Hige in defunct magazine SM Sniper.

From that year 2001, Naka Akira worked with all the major video companies producing SM related movies : Cinemagic, Taiyoh Tosho, Dogma (with director Tohjiro), Art Video (with director Muru Zou)

He also became the main bakushi for Sugiura Norio Kinbaku Sajiki regular publications. He met Sugiura Norio while assisting Nureki Chimuo for the monthly photoshoot for Mania Club, one of the few SM magazines still existing today. His work can be seen on Sugiura website www.sugiuranorio.jp

Among his video output, one can suggest, among a very large productions with many outstanding works:

The series 「縄悦」(jōetsu, rope ecstasy) directed by Muru Zou for Art Video (Number 1 to 12, from 2005 to 2014, with various digest re-issues).

『縄・七人のM女』(Nawa, nananin no Mjo) directed by Tohjiro for Dogma in 2007, as the name indicates, seven actresses, Hoshitsuki Mayura, Tomoda Maki, Hasegawa Chihiro, Hidaka Yuria, Mochida Akane, Izumi Marin, Ōtsuka Hina, in a simultaneous suspension.

But beyond his work for video and photo, Naka Akira also has played a key role is establishing in Japan and in the world the contemporary standard for kinbaku live performances performing regularly for the SM Taikai in the DX Kabukichō theater, in Loft plus One in Shinjuku, for the yearly event Sadistic Circus and many other venues in Japan.

In 2016, Vincent Guilbert filmed his documentary on Naka Akira : 『牡丹の囁き』(Botan no sasayaki, The whispering of the peony)

Internationally, he headed the bill for the international event Tōbaku in Tokyo in 2011, performed in London and Moscow in 2013, in Berlin and Los Angeles in 2014, in Paris in 2015, in Copenhagen in 2018, in Milano, Munchen and Paris in 2019 and again in Copenhagen in 2022.

He also organized from 2011 in a traditional house in Roppongi a regular Nawa Naka Kai 縄奈加會 (Society for the rope of Naka) modeled on the kinbiken. This series of events was followed by the still ongoing series Nawa Naka kai kinbaku satsuei kai 縄奈加會緊縛撮影会 (The photographic meetings of society for the rope of Naka) as well as the Seme nawa kinbaku kenkyu kai (Society for the research in kinbaku and tormenting rope (seme nawa))

Although Naka Akira has tied more that two thousand models, including uber-famous film actresses Kawakami Yū or Tomoda Maki, many of his live performances in Japan and most of his live foreign performances have been with live model extraordinaire Suzuki Iroha.

Naka Akira defines his rope style as « Naka style » but often uses the term Seme nawa (tormenting rope) to refer to some aspects of his approach to kinbaku. But he is also famous for insisting that « Rope is free », while enjoying very much the dialog with other rope practitioners.

Nawa Kai - A Rope Meeting with Naka Akira & Iroha Shizuki

23 February 2024: Nawa Kai - A Rope Meeting with Naka Akira & Iroha Shizuki

Nawa Kai can be translated into “a rope meeting” which is a tradition of Naka Akira. Unlike shows or performances, Nawa Kai is more like a private session where two people tie in the most intimate way - without rehearsal and without music, where vulnerabilities are explored, darkest desires get revealed.

Nawa Kai is also a “meeting” - it is a place to share stories and experiences about Kinbaku - the history, the philosophy, the culture, and the aesthetics.

Please note that Nawa Kai may include nudity, consensual non-consent and edge play.

In order to recreate the Nawa Kai experience in Japan, a limited number of places are available for the event. Priority will go to the workshop students, and students of Naka sensei and Subay.

Language: The Nawa Kai will be conducted in Japanese with English translation.

Tentative Schedule:

1800 Doors open

1830 Doors close / Greetings and introduction

1900 Live session 1

2000 Break

2030 Live session 2

2130 Talk

2230 End

Please note that the above schedule is subject to changes on the day. Doors will close at 1830 sharp with no exception. Please plan your journey accordingly.

Naka Akira defines his rope style as « Naka style » but often uses the term Seme nawa (tormenting rope) to refer to some aspects of his approach to kinbaku. But he is also famous for insisting that « Rope is free », while enjoying very much the dialog with other rope practitioners.

Introduction to Naka Style

Date: 13-14 January 2024

  • Jute ropes (at least 8-10 lengths of ropes, 5-6mm in diameter).

Date: Saturday, 9 December 2023

Time: 1830-2230 (Door opens at 1815)

Venue: Studio Yukari, London E1 4BG

This Rope Salon will feature a Kinbaku Live by Naoko 奈緒子 followed by a discussion on traditional semenawa.

We maintain a capacity of 20 people depending on the individual event.

Ipponnawa with huahua

Ipponnawa with huahua

This will be the last Ipponnawa class in 2023.

Explore the endless possibilities for connection through a single rope with Huahua.

Date: 28 November 2023 (Tuesday)

Kata with Subay

[Recurring event]

Learn, review, practise and perfect basic forms, patterns and ways of tying in a systematic approach.

Date: 15 November 2023 (Wednesday)

Time: 1900-2200 (door opens at 1845, closes at 1915)

Venue: Studio Yukari, London E1 4BG

Pre-requisites: All levels, solo or partnered

What will you learn?

There are multiple meanings to the word “kata” - form, pattern and “way of doing”. The focus of the KATA class series is on techniques - we adopt a systematic approach to help students understand the rationale behind each kata, internalise the movements and practise the techniques to various levels of mastery. The ultimate goal is not to tie rigidly and perfectly, but rather to develop the ability to tie precisely and in a manner that is natural and flows well with the model and the moment. In order to be in sync with your partner, you must first be in harmony with your rope.

In this monthly-recurring class, there will be discussions, demonstrations, meaningful exercise and guided practice on different techniques, patterns and concepts. Each class is different - we will explore a different form / way of tying such as: classic shapes in Shibari, handling of rope and tension and body movement.

Class structure

We will start with self-introductions and a discussion on the topic of the month. Each month there will be a set goal and with this in mind, small meaningful exercises will be introduced with demonstration followed by guided practice. At the end of each class, there will be a dedicated time to ask questions, receive feedback and practise freely.

How long is the class?

Each class is 3 hours long with the following timetable (subject to changes on the day):

1845 Door opens

1900-1930 Introduction and discussion

1930-2130 Class & guided practice

2130-2200 Q&A, feedback & free practice

Any prerequisites for this class?

Kata is an all-levels class - you might be a novice Shibari practitioner who would like to learn a new technique, or an experienced person who would like to become more fluid in tying. Some fundamental techniques such as single column tie and double column tie are helpful but not necessary.

What do I need to bring?

  • Jute ropes x 3 (5-6mm in diameter)

  • Safety shears or any other suitable cutting tools

  • Notepad and a pen

  • Comfortable clothing

  • Snacks and drinks

Semenawa with Subay

Explore and experience the beauty of suffering through rope.

Date: 1 November 2023 (Wednesday)

Time: 1900-2200 (door opens at 1845, closes at 1915)

Venue: Studio Yukari, London E1 4BG

Pre-requisites: Intermediate or above. Partnered.

What is Semenawa?

Semenawa is a concept that is easily lost in translation. There is no accurate literal translation - some translate it into “torment rope”, “reprimand rope” or “blame rope”. Semenawa involves two people exploring, experiencing or reliving emotional suffering which is distinct from physical pain. While most people associate semenawa with heavy, challenging suspensions, semenawa can also be achieved by one simple rope.

What will you learn?

In this monthly-recurring class, there will be discussions, demonstrations, meaningful exercise and guided practice on the techniques and principles of semenawa. Each month we will work on one tie / sequence. We will explore different approaches to semenawa, how to explore limits and vulnerabilities safely, how to build and progress in your scene, as well as different expressions and dynamics in semenawa. Every detail, every step, every movement is mindfully designed in view of enriching the semenawa experience.

There will be options to tie on the ground and in full/partial suspension. Please tie within your experience and comfort level.

How long is the class?

Each class is 3 hours long with the following timetable (subject to changes on the day):

1845 Door opens

1900-1930 Introduction and discussion

1930-2130 Class & guided practice

2130-2200 Q&A, feedback & free practice

Consent is highly valued in this class, you do not need to participate in any activity that you do not feel comfortable with. As a large portion of the class is discussion and theory, there is a lot to absorb without having to participate in the physical practices.

Can I practice another Shibari style during the class?

There will be time at the end of the class for free practice. Please try to keep your own free practice to this dedicated space and not during the exercise, talk or demonstrations as to not disturb other students around you.

A Weekend with Kirigami & Tenshiko - Traditional Semenawa

* This workshop is limited to 8 pairs only. This is to ensure quality of the learning experience and allow for focused attention and feedback to each pair.

Explore traditional semenawa from a practical and theoretical point of view, understanding the iconic patterns of the style, and the philosophy behind them.

Dates: 28-29 October 2023 (Sat-Sun)

Time: 1100-1800

Venue: Studio Yukari, London E1 4BG

About Kirigami and Tenshiko

Kirigami and Tenshiko are a couple both in ropes and in life.

They have been teaching and performing in different European cities since 2012. In 2016 they opened School of Rope Milano, where they teach traditional bondage three times a week to local students and foreign visitors.

Their rope is inspired by the most traditional Japanese style bondage, with an eclectic approach encompassing both private session and photography.

What will you learn?

We will approach traditional semenawa from a practical and theoretical point of view, understanding the iconic patterns of the style, and the philosophy behind them.

The Gote

We will analyse a stemless gote, understanding its structure and historical development. The differences with an original Japanese TK will be described both from a technical and philosophical point of view.

Basic patterns

Some iconic patterns will be taught and put in use. Both floorwork and simple suspensions will be part of the schedule. Each basic pattern will be used to teach a skill that can be carried over and used in several other ties.

Variations

Depending on the level of participants, some basic ties will be variated and transformed into new shapes. Variations are didactically skill-oriented, and participants will improve rope and body handling while experimenting with new ties.

Prerequisites

For the one tying / rigger / rope top:

  • Solid gote, any style

  • Suspension line management

  • Some experience with basic suspensions

  • Shibari safety

For the one getting tied / model / rope bottom:

  • Feel comfortable being tied in a gote

  • Good understanding of the difference between comfortable and sustainable, and be willing to explore both

  • Good understanding of Shibari safety, especially the difference between nerve compression and blood circulation loss

What to bring

  • Jute ropes (at least 10 lengths of ropes, 5-6mm in diameter). We also suggest having varying lengths of ropes (some shorter ones are always helpful)

  • Safety shears or any other suitable cutting tools

  • Notepad and a pen

  • Comfortable clothing

  • Snacks and drinks

  • Aftercare items

What should I wear?

Please wear something that you feel comfortable tying in / getting tied in (in terms of movement and temperature).

We advise against tight or restrictive clothing such as corsets, underwire bra, jeans etc.

Please remove your accessories such as earrings, necklaces and bracelets.

You are welcome to get changed at the studio.

What is included in the ticket price?

- Tickets for two people for the 2-day weekend intensive including 12 hours of instruction and guided practice

Rope Salon x Kinbaku Live

Date: Friday, 27 October 2023

Time: 1830-2230 (Door opens at 1815)

Venue: Studio Yukari, London E1 4BG

This Rope Salon will feature a traditional semenawa Kinbaku live by Kirigami and Tenshiko.

Subay is also happy to give general feedback (but please note that there will be no formal instruction) upon your request.

We maintain a capacity of 20-25 people depending on the individual event.

Kata with Subay

Kata with Subay

[Recurring event: 18 Oct, 15 Nov. Break in December]

Learn, review, practise and perfect basic forms, patterns and ways of tying in a systematic approach.

Date: 18 October 2023 (Wednesday)

  • Aftercare items

What should I wear?

Please wear something that you feel comfortable tying in / getting tied in (in terms of movement and temperature).

We advise against tight or restrictive clothing such as corsets, underwire bra, jeans etc.

Please remove your accessories such as earrings, necklaces and bracelets.

You are welcome to get changed at the studio.

Can I attend alone?

Absolutely! You are welcome to come solo, whether you are the one tying or the one being tied. We will facilitate pairing you up with other single attendees. If you would rather sit and observe, you are also very welcome to. There is no pressure at all - each person learns differently.

About Subay (she/her)

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Subay is a Shibari artist, performer and educator based in London. She is the founder of Studio Yukari in London and Kokoro Studio in Hong Kong.

In 2011, Subay was introduced to Shibari as a Shibari model. Deeply fascinated by its aesthetics, eroticism and emotions, she began studying the art of Japanese rope bondage in Japan. Being drawn to the raw expression of vulnerability in semenawa 責め縄 (i.e. torment rope), Subay found her teacher Naka Akira 奈加あきらand has been a formal student under Naka Ryu 奈加流 since 2015.

Subay’s style of semenawa is described to be “feminine and inclusive”. She draws great inspirations from her short encounter with Yukimura Haruki in 2014. Using rope to engage in an empathic conversation forms the heart of her style in Shibari. With her vast exposure to techniques and knowledge across various Japanese styles, she has developed a unique, adaptive and evolving approach in tying and teaching.

Subay has taught and performed in over 20 cities. Notably, she had the honour of performing at Onna Matsuri おんあ祭りand Naka sensei’s satsuei-kai 縄奈加會緊縛撮影会 in Tokyo in 2018. In 2019, she assisted Naka sensei in his workshops in San Francisco. She has also been part of Queerope hosted by Karada House since 2020.
